The windshield in your Ram pickup truck was built with safety in mind. Most auto glass windshields have two layers of tempered glass: a resin layer, and protective laminate coatings. Tempered glass is glass that is heated and cooled to make it much stronger than normal glass.
Since tempered glass is stronger, it will not break as easily under normal conditions. However, that does not mean it cannot be chipped, cracked, or broken. Fortunately, the resin layer goes in between the two layers to help hold broken pieces of glass together and in place. This layer also helps prevent chips and cracks in the exterior layer from extending into the interior layer.
Even though your Ram’s windshield is built “Ram Tough” like your truck, it can still get damaged from rocks and debris on the road, extreme weather conditions, and car accidents. If you notice your windshield has been damaged, do you replace it or repair it?
Windshield Repair Services
Thanks to modern advancements in resin-based materials, it is possible to repair certain types of damage to your windshield. Small chips and cracks are able to be filled in with the resin to hide them, although, if the crack is too big or the chip penetrates deep into the glass, then you may need to have the windshield replaced instead.
Windshield Replacement Services
Windshield replacement services are recommended in cases where repairs are not possible or if there is extensive damage to the windshield, such as a large cracked/broken area after an accident. It is important to make sure the replacement windshield is of OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) quality.
Is Windshield Damage Covered Under My Insurance?
Whether the damage is covered under your vehicle insurance will depend upon the type of coverage you have on your Ram. If you have full coverage insurance, then your windshield is most likely covered. On the other hand, if you have the basic minimum required insurance, then you may not be covered.
In addition, some policies will not have a deductible for windshield repairs but may require you to pay a deductible for windshield replacements. The best thing to do is review your insurance policy and speak to your insurance agent to determine what, if any, windshield coverage you have.
Preventing Further Damage to the Windshield
Ignoring small stone chips and cracks can lead to bigger problems. Changes in temperatures can cause the glass to expand and contract. As a result, small stone chips can start to form cracks, and existing cracks can become much bigger and longer. You will want to address any damage to your windshield sooner, rather than later.
