Indiana car buyers who want adventure as a standard feature in their next SUV purchase should give the 2018 Jeep Cherokee a look. The new Jeep Cherokee gives mid-size SUV buyers an off-road capable vehicle with an upscale interior, giving it a definite advantage over the Ford Edge, which is a much more vanilla SUV.
The new Cherokee is one of the most capable off-roaders in its class. All trim levels of the Cherokee can be equipped with four-wheel drive. The Trailhawk trim level, which is best suited for off-roading, has an upgraded four-wheel drive and a specialized suspension system. Consumers who purchase a four-wheel drive Cherokee can access five traction modes—auto, snow, sport, sand/mud, and rock—to fit the terrain they’re conquering.
While the Ford Edge has some powerful engine options, it just isn’t up to the task of off-roading and is better suited to serve as a sedate family hauler. The vehicle’s transmission is also slow to shift, negatively impacting driver experience.
The Cherokee isn’t all brawn, however. The Cherokee has a nicely designed interior with lots of creature comforts that new owners will love.
The Cherokee seats five in a spacious, beautifully designed cabin. The upholstery in the vehicle, especially in models with leather seats, is outstanding, and seats are supportive and comfortable. Soft-touch materials and thoughtfully designed features abound throughout the cabin. The new Cherokee also benefits from a very user-friendly infotainment system, Chrysler’s Uconnect interface.
While the Ford Edge also has size on its side, its cabin is nowhere as upscale as the Jeep Cherokee’s. The Ford Edge has a more pedestrian cabin, and its seats are not as comfortable as those of the Cherokee. Consumers who test drive the two vehicles will be able to tell a significant difference in the comfort offered by the Cherokee versus that offered by the Edge.
The Jeep Cherokee is also a more fuel-efficient vehicle than the Ford Edge. The new Cherokee’s base engine gets 21 mg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway, while its V6 version gets 21 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. By comparison, the Ford Edge’s base model gets 20 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. The V6 version of the Edge gets just 17 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway. While gas prices are currently low, a return to higher prices is inevitable as global demand for fuel increases.
The Jeep Cherokee is in a very competitive segment of the auto market and, right now, consumers can take advantage of that to get outstanding deals on a new Cherokee. The Cherokee sold 199,736 units last year, up from the 25,786 units sold when the model was re-introduced in 2013.
