It’s the battle of the mid-sized cars! With the crop of new 2017 vehicles arriving at dealerships, now is the perfect time to look back at last year’s batch of cars and see which ones matched the hype, which ones were the real sleeper hits, and which ones dropped the ball compared to their direct competitors.
While we obviously don’t have time to examine every 2016 car and truck from all the different manufacturers, we feel that the 2016 Chrysler 200 and the 2016 Mazda6 make for a handy comparison. Without further ado, here’s our Chrysler dealership team’s take on the real differences between the Mazda6 and the Chrysler 200.
Chrysler 200 vs. Mazda6
The reason that the 2016 Chrysler 200 and the 2016 Mazda6 make such a handy comparison is that, at the end of the day, they are very similar vehicles. In fact, when the 2016 Mazda6 was released, the common sentiment was that it had been designed specifically to take on the Chrysler 200 in the mid-sized vehicle bracket. With all due respect to the competition, however, the Mazda6 just wasn’t quite up to the task of dethroning the Chrysler 200 from its perch.
First off, let’s look at the overall designs of the two vehicles. The Mazda6 is slightly wider than the Chrysler 200, and yet its interior passenger volume is smaller: 99.7 cubic feet vs. the Chrysler 200’s 101.4 cubic feet. Additionally, the Mazda6 is a full inch shorter than its rival, meaning that there’s less headroom for passengers as well. Despite being a bulkier ride, the Mazda6 has less room for passengers to ride comfortably!
Space for passengers isn’t the only place where the Mazda6 falls short, either. The 2016 Chrysler 200 boasts a full 16 cubic feet of MFR cargo volume, whereas the Mazda6 can only manage 14.8 cubic feet—a full cubic foot less space. On top of that, the Chrysler 200 has a higher gross vehicle weight rating: 4612 pounds.
Why the Chrysler 200 Comes Out on Top
While it might seem silly to focus on cargo and passenger space above everything else, this is where the real differences between the two cars show themselves. In terms of gas mileage, performance, and every other relevant technical spec, the 2016 Chrysler 200 and the 2016 Mazda6 are almost identical.
While that might make some people more sympathetic toward the Mazda6, it also raises the question of why anyone would want to compromise on comfort and ability to transport cargo, only for them to get almost the exact same experience they would from the Chrysler 200? It simply doesn’t make sense.
If you’re looking for a recent mid-size vehicle, there really is no better choice than the Chrysler 200. Now that the 2017 vehicles are becoming available, it’s the perfect time to save money on this great car.
